Capsule Geology

The Don showings are located on McConnell Creek, which drains west- ward into the Britain River, approximately 8 kilometres north-northwest of the river mouth on Jervis Inlet.

The area is underlain by a composite biotite porphyry granite stock, probably Lower Tertiary, cored by a quartz feldspar porphyry granite phase. The stock intrudes granodiorites and diorites of the Cretaceous Coast Plutonic Complex.

Locally, a quartz feldspar porphyry granite phase of the stock hosts molybdenum and copper mineralization. The most widespread and common alteration types are sericite and quartz veinlets. A well-defined east-trending fracture zone along McConnell Creek may have controlled the emplacement of the intrusion and the mineralization as three of the four exposures are located within and immediately adjacent to the creek (Lower, Star and Upper). The fourth (called South) is on a steep slope 450 metres south of McConnell Creek in an east trending fracture zone that parallels the creek.

The Lower showing, located on McConnell Creek between 420 and 475 metres elevation, is hosted by quartz feldspar porphyry granite that is weakly fractured. Mineralization consists of chalcopyrite and molybdenite in quartz plus/minus sericite and potassic veinlets. Locally, spectacular molybdenite and/or chalcopyrite mineralization occurs in quartz veinlets enveloped by sericite with coarse rosettes of molybdenite up to 7 millimetres in size. In 1985, a representative chip sample over 10 metres at the Lower exposure assayed 0.104 per cent molybdenum and 0.230 per cent copper; while grab samples yielded values up to 0.410 per cent molybdenum and 0.280 per cent copper (Assessment Report 15167). In 1985, a character sample assayed 0.320 per cent copper, 0.680 per cent molybdenum and 3.1 grams per tonne silver (Property File - N.C. Carter [1985-08-26]: Geological Report on the Don Molybdenum-Copper Prospect).

The Star showing, located along a south- flowing tributary of McConnell Creek and near the Lower showing at an elevation of 530 metres, is hosted by a weakly to moderately fractured quartz feldspar porphyry granite. Mineralization consists of molybdenite, chalcopyrite and pyrite occurring in 0.5 to 2- centimetre wide quartz and sericite veinlets. Molybdenite varies from disseminations to coarse rosettes up to 5 millimetres in diameter. In 1985, a representative 1 metre rock chip sample assayed 0.058 per cent copper and 0.058 per cent molybdenum; while grab sample yielded up to 0.194 per cent copper and 0.177 per cent molybdenum (Assessment Report 15167).

The Upper showing, located on McConnell Creek between 685 and 705 metres, is hosted by blocky fractured quartz feldspar porphyry granite. Mineralization consists of chalcopyrite, molybdenite and pyrite occurring in sericite and quartz veins. In 1985, a 4 metre chip sample assayed 0.056 per cent copper and 0.107 per cent molybdenum; while grab samples yielded up to 0.119 per cent copper and 0.038 per cent molybdenum (Assessment Report 15167). In 1992, a character sample assayed 0.820 per cent copper, 0.600 per cent molybdenum and 7.3 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 25924).

The South showing is located on a small east-west trending narrow creek bed approximately 450 metres south of McConnell Creek and at an elevation of 625 metres. The showing consists of disseminated molybdenite with traces of chalcopyrite and pyrite in sericite and quartz veins hosted by quartz feldspar porphyry granite over an area 1 to 2 metres wide and 30 metres long. In 1985, a 0.2 metre chip sample assayed 0.058 per cent copper and 0.224 per molybdenum (Assessment Report 15167).

Mineralized float was first discovered on McConnell Creek in 1950 by Don Knight. In 1984, two areas of mineralization were identified and the Don 1-3 claims were staked. In 1985, Cominco completed a program of geological mapping and rock and soil sampling on the area. During 1990 through 1993, Brittain River Resources Ltd. prospected the area. In 1998, Homegold Resources prospected the area as the BR 1 claim.
